Embracing An Inclusive Mindset Through Accessible Technology
Thursday May 15, 2025 9:00am - 9:45am EDT
Jordyn Zimmerman will share how today’s dynamic technology landscape is transforming access to reliable communication and inclusive education for students with disabilities. Jordyn will present her own lived experience as a nonspeaking autistic person, who at age 18 after years of frustration, was given access to communication via iPad and robust AAC. Jordyn’s message about accessing the power of technology, while challenging the status quo, will push you to think deeply about how you can affect change and challenge perceptions in your own learning community.

As a Special Class Teacher, working with students who have varying needs and abilities, it is my responsibility to allow students to engage in learning and show what they know in ways that may be unconventional, but more conducive to their circumstances. To ignite curiosity, and encourage learning, my students have used various technology platforms to display their learning and share their knowledge throughout the school year. In this session, I will share some of the projects I’ve developed and used with students in this class. Special Class in Irvington is a program for students with unique learning needs that require a smaller, more individualized experience.

Design Thinking: Using AI to Re-engineer the Humanities
Thursday May 15, 2025 10:00am - 10:45am EDT
This session equips 21st-century learners and educators with an understanding of the past, present, and future of humanities education by integrating AI and design thinking to enhance creativity and collaboration. As education evolves rapidly, AI serves as an assistive technology that supports brainstorming, generates adaptive feedback, and fosters imaginative problem-solving. Through project-based learning and the IDEO Design-Thinking framework (EDIPT), students explore how a designer’s purpose—akin to an author’s purpose—drives real-world change. By leveraging AI to enhance iteration and meaning-making, this approach fosters purposeful creation, ensuring curriculum development keeps pace with modern learning while preparing students for future challenges.
